Paladin Oaths: A First-Playthrough Decision Guide · Campaign rules and dated source guidance
BG3 Paladin Oaths: A First-Playthrough Decision Guide
Quick Answer
Choose Paladin if you want a martial character whose oath also shapes roleplay choices. Read your chosen oath’s tenets before major decisions: different oaths judge actions differently, and breaking one has consequences beyond dialogue flavour.

Decide whether oath-bound choices appeal to you#
- A martial role with an oathDecision
- Paladin combines a martial role with an oath that can affect your progression. If choosing actions around a set of principles sounds interesting, that constraint can be part of the appeal. If you mainly want unrestricted roleplay, weigh the oath requirement alongside combat abilities. There is no single easiest oath established by the player accounts used here.
Caution
Use your own tenets when evaluating a choice#
Read the selected oath’s tenets before an important interaction. An action being acceptable for one oath does not make it acceptable for every oath. Do not assume non-lethal attacks automatically protect your oath either. This approach helps you assess decisions, but it is not a complete table of hidden quest triggers.

Speak to the Oathbreaker Knight#
- The Oathbreaker KnightDecision
- Breaking an oath does not end the campaign. Speak to the Oathbreaker Knight at camp to consider becoming an Oathbreaker or restoring your original oath for a fee. Oathbreaker is unlocked during play rather than selected directly at character creation. Decide which path you want before treating an oath break as a reason to abandon the character.

Compare the progression you give up#
- Later Paladin progression versus Fighter levelsDecision
- Staying with Paladin is a coherent first-playthrough choice. Taking Fighter levels for Action Surge is a trade: those levels no longer advance your Paladin progression. Compare your actual level plan and the later Paladin features it gives up. Multiclassing is not compulsory, and a claim about a different difficulty or an old attack interaction should not decide your whole build.
