Broken Front Unit Ratings and Direct-Fire Combat Explained
Quick Answer
In Broken Front by KOArtist Games, a counter’s ratings are ATK–DEF–Range–AP. For direct fire, roll 2d10, add the attacker’s ATK, subtract the target’s DEF, then apply the relevant modifiers. A final result of 8 or less causes no hits; 9–13 causes one, 14–19 two, and 20 or more three. These are the Alpha 0.9.8 direct-fire thresholds, not the separate Assault table.

Before you begin
Read ATK, DEF, Range, and AP on unit counters and calculate direct-fire hits using the Alpha 0.9.8 rules.
Counter ratings, direct-fire arithmetic, and damage states under the Alpha 0.9.8 manual; Assault uses separate rules.

Prerequisites#
- Use Broken Front by KOArtist Games, not Broken Arrow or another similarly named game.
- Check the Alpha 0.9.8 manual against your installed version if a later patch changes the rules.
Route 01
Read the counter, then resolve direct fire#
Keep the printed ratings, situational modifiers, and damage state separate while calculating an attack.
Read ATK–DEF–Range–AP in order#
ATK is attack, DEF is defense, Range is weapon range, and AP is the unit’s action-point capacity used for actions such as movement. In ammunition descriptions, AP means armor-piercing instead; those two uses of AP are not interchangeable.
Apply the direct-fire formula#
Use 2d10 + ATK − DEF + applicable modifiers. Check the manual for your weapon, range, terrain, and target situation before adding a modifier; the printed attack value alone is not the final result.
Convert the final result into hits#
Use 8 or less → 0 hits; 9–13 → 1 hit; 14–19 → 2 hits; 20 or more → 3 hits. As a hypothetical arithmetic example, a dice total of 12 with ATK 5, DEF 4, and no modifiers gives 13 and therefore one direct-fire hit. This is an example calculation, not a recorded battle.
Account for the unit’s damage state#
Damage progresses through Disrupted, Reduced, and Destroyed. A Disrupted unit has −2 ATK and cannot Assault or use Opportunity Fire. A Reduced unit has −1 ATK. Use the current state when assessing what that unit can do next.
Caution
Do not use this table for Assault#
Assault has different resolution thresholds. This page explains the printed counter and direct-fire calculation; it does not replace the manual’s separate rules for every attack type, ammunition choice, or terrain modifier.
