Double Down shield behavior · Frostburn · v0.2.0.20 evidence boundary
Far Far West Double Down: Why No Shield Appears
Quick Answer
Double Down does not create Shield Points by itself in Far Far West. Its card text says it increases Shield Points gained from all sources by 30%, so another effect must already grant shield before the modifier has anything to increase. Healing, taking damage, equipping the Joker, or waiting should not be treated as verified shield triggers. Pair Double Down with a Frost effect or another current effect that explicitly grants Shield Points, then compare the gain while staying below the 100-point shield capacity documented in the Frostburn notes. Exact rounding, per-effect values, stacking order, decay timing, and later balance changes are not established here, so use the current tooltip for any numerical test.

Before you set out
Prerequisites#
- Confirm the equipped card is Double Down and read its current tooltip. This guide uses the Frostburn-era +30% “from all sources” wording.
- Bring an effect that explicitly grants Shield Points. Double Down is a modifier, so a test with no shield source cannot demonstrate its bonus.
- Start below the documented 100-point Shield capacity. A capped bar can hide an increase even when the modifier is working.
- Keep healing, damage, invulnerability, and Shield Points separate. No source reviewed here says ordinary healing or taking damage becomes a shield generator.
What “from all sources” means#
The official Frostburn notes describe Shield Points as a separate layer above health that absorbs damage first, decays after shield has not been gained for a short period or no damage has been taken, and has a capacity of 100. The same notes list several Frost interactions that grant shield: applying Frost provides a point, Glaze can shield nearby allies, and other abilities can create protective effects. Against that system, Double Down’s wording is a multiplier on Shield Points gained from existing sources. It does not say that every action becomes a source. A player question captured the practical confusion: they equipped the card, healed and took damage, yet saw no shield. Two independent replies explained the same missing condition—an effect must already give shield. That answer fits the card wording and the official system description. It does not establish the exact amount granted by every Frost ability, the order in which several modifiers stack, how fractional points round, or whether a later patch changed the card. The reliable rule is conceptual: source first, modifier second.
Route 02
Test Double Down with a real shield source#
Use a simple before-and-after check. Avoid a crowded build where several shield, health, and damage effects make the result impossible to interpret.
Read the current card and shield tooltips#
Confirm that Double Down still describes a 30% increase to Shield Points from all sources in the live build. If the wording differs, preserve the new text and treat this Frostburn explanation as a historical boundary.
Empty enough of the shield bar#
Run the check below the official 100-point capacity. A full or nearly full shield can absorb the extra result at the cap and make the card look inactive.
Choose one explicit shield-granting effect#
Use an effect whose current text says it grants Shield Points. Official Frostburn examples include shield tied to Frost interactions. Do not substitute ordinary healing, damage taken, invulnerability, or a cosmetic effect unless its tooltip actually names Shield Points.
Observe the base gain#
If practical, trigger the source without Double Down and note the visible result. Do not assume a community example is a universal base value; exact effect numbers and build interactions need their own current verification.
Equip Double Down and repeat under the same conditions#
Use the same source, target conditions, and shield starting point. The expected direction is a larger Shield Point gain, but this guide does not prescribe an exact displayed integer because rounding and stacking order are unverified.
Separate gain from decay and damage#
Read the bar immediately enough to avoid confusing the bonus with later decay or incoming damage. The official notes describe decay conditions but not an exact timer in the saved evidence.
Pocket list 03
Verified interpretation and limits#
- Verified — Double Down’s captured wording increases Shield Points gained from all sources by 30%.
- Verified — the Frostburn system treats Shield Points as a layer above health with a 100-point capacity.
- Supported — two independent players explain that Double Down needs an existing shield-granting source.
- Not supported — equipping the card alone automatically creates Shield Points.
- Not supported — healing or taking ordinary damage becomes a shield source solely because Double Down is equipped.
- Unknown — rounding, stacking order, per-effect values, exact decay time, interactions at the cap, and later balance changes.
Fault ledger
Why the shield bonus may look missing#
- No shield appears after equipping Double Down
- Trigger an effect that explicitly grants Shield Points. The card modifies a source; it is not documented as a source itself.
- Healing does not create shield
- Keep health recovery and Shield Points separate unless another equipped effect explicitly converts or grants shield. Double Down alone does not establish that conversion.
- Taking damage does not create shield
- Damage consumes protection; it is not documented as a shield generator. Test with a named shield-granting effect instead.
- The bonus is hard to see
- Test below the 100-point cap with one source at a time. Small gains, rounding, decay, incoming damage, and multiple simultaneous effects can obscure the direction.
- A guide gives a fixed Cube or Glaze value
- Require current evidence for that exact effect and build. A community numeric example in the saved thread was self-corrected and is intentionally excluded.
Field questions
Double Down shield questions#
- Does Double Down give shield when equipped?
- Not by itself. It increases Shield Points from effects that already grant them.
- Does healing trigger Double Down?
- No reviewed source says ordinary healing becomes shield because of this card. Look for an explicit Shield Point source.
- Does taking damage grant shield?
- Not from Double Down alone. Damage and shield gain are separate events in the documented system.
- What is the shield cap?
- The Frostburn update documents a 100-point capacity. Later changes remain possible and should be checked in the live build.
- Should every source show exactly 30% more as an integer?
- The direction is a 30% increase under the captured wording, but exact rounding, stacking, caps, and display timing are not verified here.
Frostburn version boundary#
The official August 27, 2026 Frostburn notes verify the Shield Point system, its 100-point capacity, several Frost-based shield sources, and the captured context for Double Down. The player question was observed on September 11 with an August 30 original post. This guide does not assume the same card text, values, rounding, stacking, decay, or source list after a later balance patch; read the current tooltip first.
