Valheim Community Server Meaning: Public List, Passwords, and Dedicated Hosts

Quick Answer

In Valheim, a community server is a server you can find in the in-game Join Game flow under the Community servers list, or join directly by IP and forwarded port if the host provides it. A dedicated server is a separate host process that advertises through Steam server query when enabled, validates player IDs, checks banned and permitted lists, validates a password and version code, and relays world data. Many servers still require a password. Community listing, dedicated hosting, and admin permission are separate from cheat access.

Before you begin

Understand what the Community servers list means, how Join IP and passwords fit, and why a dedicated server is not the same as a cheat-enabled world.

Prerequisites#

  • Use this page for server-browser wording and joining expectations, not for port-forwarding every router.
  • Have the server name, password, join code, or IP and port from the host before troubleshooting.
  • Do not assume that public listing means public permission to use cheats or admin commands.

What Community server means in Valheim#

The dedicated-server reference describes joining by starting Valheim, selecting a character, choosing Join Game, and finding the server name in the Community servers list, or using Join IP. In player terms, Community server usually means a joinable server shown in that public list rather than only a private local world. It does not automatically mean no password, no rules, or no host control. The same source describes dedicated servers as validating Steam IDs, banned and permitted lists, passwords and version codes. That is why a visible community listing can still reject you if the password, version, permit list or host details are wrong.

Ways to join a Valheim server#

  • Community servers list: find the server name from the Join Game tab after selecting your character.
  • Join IP: enter the server IP and forwarded port when the host gives you direct details.
  • Same computer as host: the saved reference gives 127.0.0.1:2456 for local connection to a server hosted on the same machine.
  • LAN server: use the server computer's local IP, often starting with 192.168, plus the forwarded port.
  • Someone else's server: use the in-game browser if listed, or get the public IP and forwarded port from the host.

Dedicated server is a hosting method, not a cheat promise#

The source separates built-in client hosting from the dedicated server tool. You can play using the built-in server hosting option in the Valheim client, or operate a dedicated server as a separate server process. The dedicated server relays communication and provides remote map data when enabled, but it is not described as a place where cheat commands work. In fact, the command source says cheats work in singleplayer or manually hosted mode only, not dedicated servers. If your question is really about commands, first identify whether the world is manually hosted or dedicated.

Common Community server misunderstandings#

The server is listed but I cannot join
Ask for the password, confirm the server version, and check whether the host uses permitted or banned lists. Listing and permission are different.
Join IP fails
Confirm the IP and forwarded port from the host. The saved source distinguishes 127.0.0.1 for the same machine, a LAN IP for the local network, and a public IP for someone else's server.
I am an admin but cheats still fail
Dedicated-server admin access allows admin-specific commands, not cheats or debugmode. Do not troubleshoot this as a typo in devcommands.
Crossplay changes the connection flow
The dedicated-server source describes crossplay as using relay connectivity and join codes or external IP and gameplay port as identifiers. Treat crossplay networking as a connection mode, not a change to command permissions.
