Valheim Fly Command: fly, debugmode, and Z Explained
Quick Answer
Valheim has a fly command: after opening the console and enabling devcommands, type fly to toggle fly mode. The command table notes that this is the same fly mode as debug mode, where Z toggles flying, Spacebar gives altitude, and Ctrl brings you back down. To enter debug mode, type devcommands, then debugmode. These cheat/debug controls work in singleplayer or manually hosted mode, not on a dedicated server.

Guide details
Before you begin
Use fly or debugmode's Z toggle where cheats are allowed, and keep Space/Ctrl flight controls separate from dedicated-server admin tools.
Vanilla fly and debugmode controls, with world-type limits. Not a modded creative mode, server bypass, or personal test of every current platform.

Before you set out
Prerequisites#
- Enable the console first, then type devcommands before using fly or debugmode.
- Use this only in worlds where cheats are allowed. Dedicated-server admin status does not grant debugmode or fly cheats.
- Know how to turn the mode off before you continue normal play.
Route 01
Toggle Valheim fly mode with the fly command#
Open the console and enable cheats#
Start from the same setup used by the other command pages: enable the console, press F5 in game, then type devcommands. The command table places fly under cheat commands, so do not expect it to work as an ordinary chat command.
Type fly#
Enter fly to toggle fly mode. The source describes it as the same fly mode used by debug mode's Z control. If you only need flight, fly is the direct command.
Use debugmode controls when debug mode is active#
If you entered debugmode, press Z to toggle fly, Spacebar to gain altitude, and Ctrl to come back down. The debug table also lists B for no-cost building and K for killing nearby enemies, so avoid enabling debugmode casually if you only meant to test flight.
Toggle off before normal play#
Run fly again, or leave debugmode if you entered it. Mixing building, combat and flight cheats into a normal world can make later observations hard to trust.
fly and debugmode are related, but not identical habits#
The command list gives fly as its own cheat command and notes that it matches the fly mode in debug mode. The debug-mode section explains how to enter debugmode and lists Z as the fly toggle with Spacebar and Ctrl for vertical movement. In practical terms, use fly when you want just flight, and use debugmode only when you intentionally need its broader test controls. This avoids accidentally using B no-cost building or K enemy removal when your task was only movement.
Fault ledger
If fly does not work#
- The console says the command is unavailable
- Check whether you typed devcommands first and whether you are in a supported world type. Cheat commands do not work on a dedicated server.
- Z does nothing
- Z is the debug-mode fly toggle, not the general setup step. Type devcommands, then debugmode, then use Z. If you used the fly command instead, toggle flight with fly.
- I can administer the server but cannot fly
- That is expected on a dedicated server. The dedicated-server source says admin status allows admin-specific commands, not cheats or debugmode.
- I rose into the air and cannot descend cleanly
- In debug fly mode, Ctrl brings you back down. If you used the direct fly command, toggle it off carefully and land before continuing.
Field questions
Valheim fly command questions#
- What is the Valheim fly command?
- The command table lists fly as toggling fly mode after devcommands are enabled.
- What does debugmode add?
- debugmode unlocks debug controls, including Z for fly, B for no-cost building, K for nearby enemy removal, L for item drops, Ctrl plus map middle-click teleport, and Shift+C for day.
- Can I fly on a community dedicated server?
- No vanilla cheat access is established for dedicated servers. Admin list access is separate from cheats and debugmode.
